Boxing is a wonderful sport that trains fitness, coordination, reaction and strength. Unfortunately, you can‘t really train reaction skills for this sport alone, you always need a sparring partner.
To solve this problem, I have designed a product concept, called BoxKit – a smart punching bag with different modes.
The core of the punching bag consists of a metal cylinder with two coloured LEDs. Instead of conventional punching bags that are completely filled with granulate, BoxKit consists of different inside elements through whose recesses the light of the LEDs shines through the upper material. The green LEDs stand for attack (punching) and the red ones for defend (by moving away or using gloves as a shield). Via an app, you can activate different modes and at the same time measure your reaction time, as the core also measures the vibrations of the punches. This motivates the user to react even quicker to the LEDs during the next training session.
Technical aspects
Core & colour-changing LED lights
The core consists of an aluminium tube with colour-changing LEDs attached to it. Inside the tube are the electrotechnical parts which connect the punching bag with a phone or iPad via bluetooth or WIFI.
Core & light pipes
After the LEDs are attached to the core, the flexible light pipes will be attached to the core.
Inside elements
The inside elements have cutouts, which let the light of the LEDs through, so the user knows what action to take. Each element is filled with granulate.
Cover
The cover is made from strong, semi-translucent material. On top is a whole for the power supply of the punching bag.
This project is a concept, therefore I hadn’t had the chance to test how exactly the technical parts would work. I am aware that especially the electrotechnical part might be tricky due to it’s durability in regards to vibrations from the punches.
CONNECTION VIA APP
BoxKit can be used for personal as well as for commercial use. The app was designed to give people motivation and a good overview of their progress.
Boxit App-screen
When the training has started in the desired mode, the timer will show how long each sequence will be. In between each sequence is a short pause before the next sequence will start.
Schedule & Mode App-screen
For each training the user can individually adapt their training to their motivation and fitness level. If the user is more experienced they can also save some trainings to “your modes” and redo the same workouts.
The schedule gives the user the opportunity to plan their training in advance as well as look back on done trainings. This should motivate the user and remind them of their trainings.
Ipad stand for fitness studios
BoxKit is designed to be suitable for both private and commercial use. For this reason, an iPad stand was designed which is provided with an individual QR code. This allows gym members to log in with their account and save the data. If a member wants to train without an account, the desired mode can be selected on the iPad.
